Location. Backed up against steep mountains, the Paul do Mar Aparthotel is a 60 studio oceanfront hotel isolated at the end of the road in the fishing village of Paul do Mar. The town of Calheta with its imported white sand beach is five kilometres west. Funchal Airport (FNC) is 60 kilometres away.

Hotel Features. Outdoor and indoor heated freshwater pools, including a children's pool, provide year round swimming. A complimentary health club includes sauna, steam room, spa tub, and rooms for massage, facials, and nail care (surcharges for services). An onsite mini market sells wine and basic groceries.

Guests of Paul do Mar Aparthotel enjoy a complimentary buffet breakfast each morning. The restaurant serves Portuguese dishes at lunch and dinner, including locally caught fish. A pool bar offers drinks and snacks all day.

The hotel features three heated freshwater swimming pools: an outdoor pool with children's pool and an indoor pool. Guests can go fishing at the black sand and stone beach across the street. Twice weekly, the hotel offers guided walking tours (surcharges) that include visits to local banana farms and vineyards. Yoga lessons (surcharge) are available in the village. Water sports are available on Calheta's beach.

Guestrooms. There are 60 air conditioned self catering studios in a six storey building facing the ocean. Decor is light and simple, with furnished balconies overlooking the ocean. Kitchenettes have two cooking hobs, microwaves, and refrigerators. Amenities include TV with international channels, safes (surcharge), and bathrooms with hair dryers.

Expert Tip. A winding footpath runs up the mountainside on the hotel's west side. This was used by villagers to reach the main road before one was built to the village. Today, hearty guests can ascend the path to reach a restaurant on a 500 metre bluff, or simply to enjoy panoramic views of the mountains and ocean.

Driving Directions

Getting there. A taxi from the airport costs 65 70 EUR. A hire car is recommended to reach the hotel, and the hotel also rents out mountain bicycles. The hotel staff can call taxis on request, with advance notice required. Guests can walk around the village and up the mountainsides.

Driving directions. From Funchal Airport, follow motorway to Ribeira Brava roundabout. Turn right toward Ponta do Sol and go through the tunnel. Approaching Ponta do Sol roundabout, go through the tunnel toward Madalena do Mar. At the roundabout at the tunnel's end, turn right toward Calheta on the coast road. At the road's end, turn left toward Calheta. Proceed through two tunnels to the roundabout and continue towards Arco da Calheta, through another tunnel. At the roundabout at the tunnel's end, head toward Calheta/Prazeres. After approximately 500 metres, turn left towards Jardim do Mar and Paul do Mar. Go down the hill, through the tunnel toward Paul do Mar and follow the signs to hotel.
